EMERALD

Emerald is the green to bluish green variety of beryl, a mineral species that also includes aquamarine as well as beryls in other colors.

As with any gem deposit, Ethiopia produces emeralds with a wide range of quality. Much of the material is commercial grade, often heavily included with black mica crystals. However, some truly amazing gems have come from this deposit as well. The top-quality stones from Ethiopia are grass green or green with a hint of a blue hue, and have no need for oil enhancement.

Gem experts differ on the degree of green that makes one stone an emerald and another stone a less-expensive green beryl. Some people in the trade tend to give the name emerald to any green beryl colored by chromium. But to most gemologists, gemological laboratories, and colored stone dealers, it is more correct to call a stone green beryl when its color is “too light” for it to be classified as emerald. Even among that group, however, there’s a difference of opinion about what’s considered “too light.”

OPAL

The opal is a precious stone so distinctive that everyone can identify it, with its many colored flashing lights. The brilliance and vibrant colors within an opal resemble the colors of fall. Opal is unique among gems, as it displays an array of very brilliant miniature rainbow iridescent effects, all mixed together.

Ethiopian Opal is the newest variety of precious opal gemstone resourced from the Wollo Province of northern Ethiopia, producing beautiful precious opal, fire opal, and black opal with spectacular play-of-color in a variety of patterns and body colors.

SAPPHIRE

Sapphire is a precious gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum. The name sapphire is derived from the Latin “saphirus” and the Greek “sapheiros”, both of which mean blue. It is typically blue, but natural “fancy” sapphires also occur in yellow, purple, orange, and green colors; “parti sapphires” show two or more colors. Red corundum stones also occur, but are called rubies not sapphires. Pink-colored corundum may be classified either as ruby or sapphire depending on locale. Commonly, natural sapphires are cut and polished into gemstones and worn in jewelry.  Because of the remarkable hardness of sapphires – 9 on the Mohs scale (the third hardest mineral, after diamond at 10 and moissanite at 9.5)

The majority of Ethiopian sapphires are blue, with a few pure yellows.

High-quality blue sapphires are discovered in northern Ethiopia. The color of these sapphires ranges from dark greenish blue to a pleasing light blue. A yellowish cast is often observed with a torch.
